We built PUG Shooter after spending far too many years opening old-school bubble shooter games whenever we had ten minutes to kill. The basic loop still works: line up a shot, find a colour match, drop a hanging group and immediately spot the next move. We wanted that same easy rhythm in a browser game of our own, with faster controls, a few tactical twists and, for reasons that made perfect sense at the time, an unreasonable number of pug faces.
PUG Shooter is a free online bubble shooter game for desktop, phone and tablet. It opens directly in a modern browser and the result of a completed board is measured in shots. A clear in 41 shots beats a clear in 42. That simple rule became much more useful to us than a traditional points score because every finished game gives you a number you can genuinely try to beat.
The game grew through actual play rather than from a giant design document. We kept the parts that made classic bubble shooter games satisfying, then changed the things that annoyed us. Bank shots matter. A precise gap can be used. The current pug can be swapped with the next one on desktop. Colours disappear from the future queue once they are gone from the board, apart from a next pug that was already waiting. The result is familiar within seconds, but it gives you plenty to optimise once you start chasing a low shot count.
Aim with the mouse, or hold and drag on a touchscreen, then launch a pug into the honeycomb grid. Connect at least three pugs of the same colour to clear them. Groups that lose their connection to the top drop away too, so a carefully placed shot can remove much more than the first match. Wall bank shots are part of the game, and the Space key on desktop swaps the current pug with the next one when you want a different tactical option.
Classic Endless is our long-session bubble shooter mode. A shot that does not create a match uses one warning. When the warnings run out, a fresh row is pushed in from the top. The run ends when those added rows force the bubble mass down to the danger area. Clear the whole field and your final shot count becomes the number to beat.
Wave Challenge is built around consecutive boards. Clear the current field, move on to the next wave and keep the run going as the layout gets denser. Each wave has its own local record category, which makes it useful when you want a shorter challenge instead of one long Classic Endless board.
The difficulty settings change the shape of the challenge. Easier modes give you a friendlier board and more aiming help. Hard adds more colours and tighter decisions. Insane removes the aiming guide entirely, so wall angles and narrow shots have to be judged by eye. That one is deliberately rude.
We wanted the same free bubble shooter to feel natural with a mouse on a computer and with touch controls on a phone or tablet. The board scales to the available screen, touch aiming uses hold-drag-release, and the interface stays focused on the game. If you choose to activate local storage, PUG Shooter can also remember your Top 10, optional name and preferred settings on that device.
There is one reward we kept deliberately rare. Beat the existing number-one record for the current category and Dexter, our 3D pug, takes over the screen for the celebration. He runs in, clears the remaining pug bubbles himself and presents the new record. Making the Top 10 is nice. Taking first place gets the dog.
Because a good casual browser game still has a job to do. Sometimes you want a quick puzzle between two other things. Sometimes one board turns into six. PUG Shooter was built around that kind of repeat play: clear rules, instant restarts, satisfying drops and enough randomness to make the next board feel different without changing the game underneath you.
We also wanted the fewest-shots record to create a different sort of challenge from the usual score counter. A lucky chain can help, but every shot still matters. Once you know a board can be cleared in 52 shots, 51 suddenly looks possible. Then 49. That is the part that kept us testing the game for much longer than originally planned.
If you searched for a free bubble shooter, an online bubble shooter game, a browser puzzle game or simply something quick to play on a phone or computer, you already know most of the rules. The colourful pug bubbles, local shot records, two game modes and Dexter's record celebration are the parts we added to make this one ours.
